The Infernalist – The Environment
We decided to go on the route of using a realistic environment for The Infernalist as opposed to a stylized one. In fact, we want to create as much visual realism as possible for you to enjoy. In some cases we even went to extreme lengths to make it happen. Take a look at this road for example, it has been manually made with two types of dirt and one of sand as well as many other bits and pieces to obtain an increased level of realism… and there are hundreds of meters of road in the game. The action of The Infernalist is going to take place in an open world. As such, the area that you are going to explore initially is quite large. In real life, you don’t cross an entire forest in a minute on foot… it… actually takes a while… or… in about 5 minutes you’re not likely to encounter all possible landscapes. In The Infernalist we have large areas of a particular landscape. Take a look at this open field right here, it’s just… grass… really. Lots and lots of square meters of grass… which you do find in real life as well in certain areas. Exploring this on foot… believe me, it’s going to take a while. We do have some systems in place to prevent the game play from getting boring. Focusing on the environment alone for now, there are obviously a lot of ways to do it, but what made most sense for us, was to create hubs of interest across the map. You’ll have to walk in the open for quite some time, but you will find a lot of other things to explore here and there in order to see the story through. It’s just not going to be right there, in your line of sight. The biggest hub of interest is definitely The Village. The Village is an area that you’re going to encounter quite early in the game. It’s medieval and a good chunk of the story is going to unravel there. So naturally we had to pay close attention to a lot of details, both exterior and interior. We took extra care in designing the props on which you are going to find any form of written text in the game. On most of them, you can read some text without even picking up, or inspecting the object… pretty much as you would when you find a piece of paper on your desk. And the sky… the sky had to match the story of The Infernalist as well. As your character awakens and takes a look to the sky, he barely sees any sunshine… it all looks quite gloomy to be honest. Adding the slightly foggy dark forest landscape to that and you suddenly emphasize the need to start moving right away and find shelter. We’ll reveal more in the episodes to come.
